The first step in getting your domain setup is purchasing your websites domain name. That’s the address to your website (eg; websitemaker.co.nz). There are a few things to consider here.

1. Is your domain name available?

It is possible that someone already has purchased the domain name you are thinking about getting? Don’t get too set on one name. Have a back up in mind just in case yours is already taken.

2. Is your domain too similar to another companies domain?

While this can’t always be avoided, if you think your domain name is going to be confused with another company, it’s probably best to change it.

3. Do you want a .com, .co.nz, .kiwi ?

This one is up to you. Are you doing business worldwide? If so, maybe the .com is a good option. Are you only doing business in a specific country? Look at that country’s specific TLD (top level domain). For example; New Zealand is .co.nz, Australia is .com.au etc.

4. Does your domain name read well?

Give that domain name a second look and make sure it reads well. Don’t know what I mean? Check out this link and you will soon understand.

5. Where to purchase your domain?

We get our domains from Crazy Domains. When purchasing a domain you don’t need to worry too much about anything other than price. For us, Crazy Domains nails that aspect. Their support is also good, but you probably won’t need to use their support at all. There is only one thing we don’t like about Crazy Domains and that is there insistent need to try to upsell you on other products. However, it is very easy to ignore them, but can be confusing for first-time domain buyers.
